Recent government changes to business car capital allowances mean that it is cheaper for businesses to run company cars that emit 160g/km of CO₂ or less.  As a result, many companies are ‘capping’ fleet choice lists at that level.

Following the April changes to capital allowance rules, all motoring taxes as well as company car driver benefit-in-kind tax are now based on a car’s carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.  Choosing sub-160g/km cars not only helps businesses to save cash, it also ensures drivers will pay reduced benefit-in-kind tax bills.  Lower CO₂ also goes hand-in-hand with better fuel economy, so both companies and their employees will be further rewarded with petrol or diesel fuel bill savings.

Buyers of the Mazda2 with the 1.4 diesel 68ps and 1.6 diesel 90ps engines – which record 107g/km and 112g/km of CO₂ respectively – benefit from being in the lowest 13 per cent company car benefit-in-kind tax band.  In addition, the ultra-clean 1.4 diesel also beats the 110g/km threshold for 100 per cent first year capital allowances which applies to the cleanest cars on sale.
