Used Car of the Year 2008 - 4x4s

18 September 2008

Winner: Land Rover Discovery 2.7 TDV6 SE 7st
Year: '05/55
Price: £19,765

If you are going to buy a 4x4, you may as well do it properly. The Discovery's credentials are impeccable.

Designed and built by the most famous 4x4 company in the world, it's extremely capable in the rough yet extremely comfortable on the road, and was good enough to win What Car?'s Car of the Year in 2005. Enough said.

Last year, the Discovery managed only a runners-up position in our used car awards but, with its prices falling, our judges felt that now is the time to buy one.

Which model?
The seven-seat model is the version to go for, and the same goes for the 2.7-litre diesel engine, which returns an official average of 30mpg.

You could splash out on the high-spec HSE, but we think that's a bit of an extravagance because the SE has all that you could reasonably want - sat-nav, electrically adjustable leather seats and a CD-multichanger are all included as standard.

Despite its bulk, the Discovery is stable at 70mph, thanks to its adaptive suspension, and while it isn't quite the best-handling 4x4 (that title goes to the BMW X5), it copes very well.

There's certainly none of the body roll exhibited by some rivals. On top of that, the space and comfort inside make it ideal for long family journeys.

Where to get one
You're better off sticking to franchised dealers for the best cars, but such is the Disco's popularity that higher-mileage examples are also available at independents.

Beware, though, because some of the cheapest cars may have led hard lives as motor maintenance and Highways Agency patrol vehicles.

Power: 193bhp

0-60mph/top speed: 11.2sec/112mph
Insurance:Group 14
CO2: 249g/km
Service intervals: 12,000 miles
